FIRS boss, Babatunde Fowler advocates for ‘phone call’ tax

Speaking to TheCable on Monday, October 7, the FIRS Chairman said Nigerians talk more than is required so for them to have the capacity or revenue to talk that much, there is no harm in giving a cut out of it to the government.

“I will put it this way, Nigerians talk a lot on the phone; they even talk more than is required so for them to have capacity or revenue to talk that much, I don’t see any harm in paying a little bit more to government,” he said.

“We compare ourselves to developing countries but Ghana introduced a 2% education tax and used it to fund their universities and that is why Nigerians are now going to university in Ghana. They didn’t look for aid, they did it by themselves.

While lawmakers are pushing for a 9% charge for using telecommunication services in place of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) proposed 2.2% increase in value-added tax, Babatunde Fowler also explained how the increased VAT will be taken from Nigerians.

“All we are saying is that those who use online facilities, we will give instructions to the banks that once they make the payment, they will just charge 5% VAT and remit it as an agent to FIRS.

“By the VAT Act, the minister has the right to change the rate but this government, I believe wants to carry every stakeholder along including those in the house and explain to them that this increase is for the benefit of all Nigerians. And it will only apply to what I call privileged items like buying a car or lunch in an expensive restaurant. The money will help the state look after the needy among us” he said.

  1. WHAT ELSE CAN COME OUT FROM SUCH QUARTER?

IT IS ALL ABOUT TAXATION.NOTHING MORE TO OFFER.A MAN FIRST, EARNS A PAY AND THEN QUALIFIES TO PAY A TAX.IN NIGERIA, WE ALL TALK WHETHER YOU EARN A LIVING OR NOT.THERE SHOULD BE NO RESTRICTION BY TAX.

-SO MR. TAX SPECIALIST AND PROPONENT, STUDENTS AND NON -WORKING MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY AND ALL OTHER JOBLESS NIGERIANS (THESE MAKE UP A VERY LARGE PORTION OF THE NIGERIAN POPULATION), WHAT IS THEIR SOURCE OF REVENUE THAT HAS COMPELLED YOU TO COME UP WITH SUCH A “HEELY” SUGGESTION? I CONSIDER THIS SUGGESTION A NO BRAINER AT ALL.

ALL THE TIME, THE EVIL PLAN IS ON HOW TO TAKE FROM THE PEOPLE, NOT, NEVER HOW TO GIVE BACK.NEVER HOW TO PROVIDE.NEVER HOW TO ENRICH.TAKE FROM THE POOR AND GIVE TO THE RICH.

WHAT HAVE THIS NATION DONE TO EMPOWER THESE PEOPLE YOU ARE SETTING UP FOR TAX DEDUCTION BECAUSE THEY TALK.ARE WE NOW REQUIRED TO KEEP QUIET?BECOME DUMB?ALL THE FORMS OF TAXATION ALREADY IN FORCE HAS NOT HELPED THE COUNTRY RISE UP,IS IT YOUR TALK – TAX THAT WILL DELIVER?

A MAN WAKES UP AND AFTER A MEAL OF POUNDED YAM AND EGUSI SOUP, COMES UP WITH AN IDEA SUGGESTED PERHAPS BY AN ILLITERATE GIRL FRIEND,WHO KNOWS NOT HOW MONEY IS GENERATED.THE NEXT IS FOR HIM TO AIR HIS VIEWS AND EXPECT US TO LIVE WITH IT JUST BECAUSE HE BELONGS TO THE CORPORATE WORLD.

IF THESE 9 TYPES OF TAXES CANNOT DELIVER GROWTH AND SERVICES IN NIGERIA WHAT ELSE CAN?
    -COMPANIES INCOME TAX CIT
    -PETROLEUM PROFIT TAX PPT
    -VALUE ADDED TAX VAT
    -PERSONAL INCOME TAX PIT
    -WITH HOLDING TAX WHT
    -EDUCATION TAX EDT
    -STAMP DUTIES TAX STD
    -CAPITAL GAINS TAX CGT

TAX IS REAL.IT IS NOT AN ACADEMIC EXERCISE.

THE NEGATIVE IMPACT OF TAXATION ON PERSONAL AND COMPANIES INCOMES IS DEVASTATING AND WHEN LINKED WITH THE GLARING ABSENCE OF FACILITIES SUCH AS POWER,WATER,FOOD AND SHELTER,THE EFFECT IS MARCHING -ON- A -SINGLE- LANE -TO -EXTINCTION.

NO BODY SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT A NEW FORM OF TAXATION ON THE PEOPLE OF NIGERIA.IT IS NOT REQUIRED.IT IS AN ABERRATION.

  2. “THE MONEY WILL HELP THE STATE LOOK AFTER THE NEEDY AMONG US”

THIS SEEMS TO BE THE REASON FOR THE TAX! MY GOD IN HEAVEN!!!

REALLY? SINCE WHEN HAS THE NEEDY BEEN CONSIDERED IN THIS COUNTRY? AND WHO ARE THESE NEEDY?

    MY DEFINITION OF THE NEEDY

-THE STUDENTS IN THE UNIVERSITY WITHOUT BURSARY AWARDS

-THE RETIREES WHO HAVE BEEN TOSSED AROUND UNTIL DEATH CLAIMED THEM WITHOUT ACCESSING THEIR PENSIONS.

-THOSE WITH TERMINAL DISEASES WHO CANNOT REALLY HELP THEMSELVES AND EVENTUALLY SUCCUMB TO EARLY DEATH DUE TO LACK OF MEDICAL ATTENTION OR THE EXORBITANT COST THEREOF OR BOTH.

-THE NIGERIAN SENIOR CITIZENS,THOSE INCAPACITATED, BLINDED AND WRECKED BY POVERTY IN THIS COUNTRY.

IN MY OPINION THESE ARE ONES.HISTORICALLY,WHAT HAS BEEN DONE FOR ANY OF THESE GROUPS.NOTHING.

AND NOW WHAT DO I HEAR? MORE TAXATION IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE THEM.

    NDI GOVERNMENT,WERE KWA NWAYO.
