Finally, Atiku breaks silence On Ruga settlements

Former Nigeria’s Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, says his stance on Ruga settlements initiated by the President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government, aligns with that of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s main opposition party.

Laila News recalls that the Nigerian government suspended the controversial Ruga initiative on Thursday, July 4.

The Buhari administration had proposed to resolve the clashes between farmers and herdsmen through Ruga settlements but suspended the plan after the idea was greeted by widespread criticism by Nigerians.

After the suspension, the northern youths in response issued a 30-day ultimatum to every southerner residing in the north to vacate unless Ruga is implemented.

Days after the threat, Abubakar took to Twitter to reveal his position on Ruga settlements as well as the threat issued by the Northern youths.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 Presidential election, wrote: “My position on Ruga is the same as articulated by the Governors elected under the banner of my party, the PDP. My position has been well iterated by our Governors & the PDP is one. I will not dignify that threat with a response. There is no North or South. There is just Nigeria.”
