Atletico Madrid and Brazilian defender, Filipe Luis, has said the FIFA Best Player award has lost its credibility.
Luis blasted FIFA for not including Barcelona ace, Lionel Messi, in the shortlist of players for the Best FIFA Men’s Player award 2018.
He said that Messi was the right person to be given the award, adding that the award had lost “credibility” following the denial of the Argentine.
Messi, widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest ever players, has won a host of individual accolades during his career.
Messi is not in the running for this year’s award with Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Mohamed Salah in contention instead. Luis said;
“The award is for the best player in the world,” Luis told Brazilian outlet Globoesporte.
“For me, today, it’s Messi.
“Just like in previous years.
“When he’s not there, it loses credibility.
“It doesn’t matter who wins the World Cup or the Champions League.
“He’s the best.”
Messi finished second in the two editions of The Best to date, always behind Cristiano. Neymar was third in 2016 and Griezmann in 2017.
The winner will be named on September 24 at a gala in London. The prizes are voted for by players, coaches journalists and fans through the Internet.
The exclusion of Lionel Messi, has come as a rude shock to majority of his fans across the world who still believes the football genius supersedes all other players when it comes to showing off their skills on the field of play.
