Fear of ICC made Jonathan concede defeat – Femi Falana

Femi Falana has dismissed the fear that President Muhammadu Buhari might be unwilling to leave office if he should lose next year’s election, as he further maintained that fear of ICC made Jonathan to concede defeat in 2015.

Fear of ICC made Jonathan to concede defeat – Femi Falana lailasnews

Femi Falana in a  statement made available to journalists on Monday, claimed that the real reason former President Goodluck Jonathan conceded defeat in 2015 was because of the arrest and prosecution warning issued by the International Criminal Court ahead of the elections.

Falana who spoke at the inauguration of the League of Anambra Professionals Legal Defence Initiative, held in Lagos over the weekend, claimed that prior to the 2015 elections, the ICC had warned that should there be any violence and crimes against humanity, any leader responsible would be arrested and prosecuted the same way the ex-President of Cote d’Ivoire, Laurent Gbagbo, was prosecuted.

The activist added that for fear of ICC, no Nigerian leader dared annul election again like a former Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (retd.), did in 1993.

Falana said, “Unlike in 1993 when the military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, successfully annulled an election, that is no longer possible.

“Whoever does that now will end up in The Hague. He is likely to be tried for crimes against humanity because if you annul an election, you are likely to have a monumental violence in the country which will lead to crimes against humanity.

“Before the 2015 elections, the ICC warned that if there was any problem in Nigeria, anybody who was responsible would be arrested and charged like former President Laurent Gbagbo of Cote d’Ivoire. That was the atmosphere under which President Goodluck conceded victory.”

  1. Falana u lie, how many African President have turn result in their favour and ICC did nothing, Jonathan was God sent.

  2. Call it fear of the ICC or anything, Jonathan made the best decision ever. His humility to accept defeat endeared to many people’s hearts even internationally.

  3. Hmm I can’t agree to this claim because ex president Jonathan was and is still a very peaceful personality. I remember his words that the blood of a similar hoe Nigerian is better than his win for the seat of a president(though I’m not quoting him verbatim). Jonathan is a peaceful and humane man who didn’t let his selfish desires ruin the lives of Nigerians

  4. It is good like that. The ICC will act as check and balance for leaders that may have it in mind not to leave power for another winner in elections

  5. What do you have expected him to do? He had to bow out to avoid bloodshed because he dislikes it. It is not cowardice or weakness just that he has the human sympathy and knows the pain it would cause someone to loose his fellow one. I like him for that singular act. You can do any thing you feel when it gets to your turn. He did what he thinks that is right. Violence does not pay rather it degrades and ruins life.

  6. What do you people want Jonathan to do? He did the right thing by stepping down else there would have been war, he’s an humble man.

  7. Thank God for whatever made him to concede defeat. Jonathan remains my hero anytime any day. Thank God he saved Nigeria from chaos

  8. I know that the ICC will not change their position on that matter in 2019 because it’s almost obvious that he might not win. The accusation of not being who we think he is has serious negative effect

  11. I don’t agree with this. Jonathan is a peaceful man and he doesn’t want the blood of the innocent to be spilled, so all he did was for the peace of Nigeria and not fear of any court.

  12. Big big talk. PGJ is a leader with a difference. If Icc like the should give the person public execution or not, a bad leader is a bad leader

  18. Violence does no one any good it only leads to crisis which in turn result in death. Conceding defeat by congratu Latin president Buhari is the best thing ever done by any political leader in Nig.

  20. Jonathan signed a peace accord with buhari as witnessed by Adbusalam to accept the outcome of the election with the help of the international bodies. I believe Jonathan didn’t and ordinarily would not have accepted defeat

  21. Well, that was in the past . But, i believe one of the reasons why Jonathan conceded defeat was thay he wanted peace , some politicians are already doing a lot of evil things especially the case of boko haram . He stepped down for peace to reign . It was an honourable thing to do

  22. It’s a lie, Jonathan conceded defeat to buhari because he said that his ambitions is not worth the blood of any nigerian, so Jonathan is a peaceful and gentle man

  23. They can say all they want, all I know is Goodluck will still remain the hero he is because if he didn’t concede, we would have been the ones to bear the brunt.

  24. Whether he feared the treats or not it has passed now,Buhari should follow suit if he loss the next year elections

  25. Falana’s revelation could be true but what about cases where elections were glaringly manipulated to favour the incumbent. case study of Kenya and Zimbabwe, violence did erupt in these countries.

  26. Jonathan tenure was somehow but nothing like bloodshed, and everything was make sense in a little bit but Let wait and see…..

  27. I like him for that singular act. You can do any thing you feel when it gets to your turn. He did what is right good luck remain the hero

  28. I acn also agree with what falna said because he dont want what happen to lauren gbabgb to happen to him

  30. he said it before it happen. That his election does not a blood of any Nigerian and that’s why you an I are alive today.

  31. Falana could say whatever he feels, but Good luck has been thr best Nigeria has had do far, he only accepted the elections result because he had the peace of the country at heart. Haters will now bring their own theory. . . Falana should concentrate more on Falz his son Abeg.

  32. It is possible that, that could be one of the reasons but it is also possible that,it wasn’t part of the reasons at all. But one thing we know is that if Our former president didn’t concede defeat during the 2015 elections, there would have been a lot of chaos.

  33. A very big lie. God really wanted the humble formal president to out for a particular reason and purpose best known to him.

  34. Falana I don’t think you are saying the truth. If it because of ICC why didn’t they act when Osun state governorship election was annulled.

  35. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is a man of integrity. He hate blood shed. He had to bow out to avoid bloodshed . He is not afraid or being weak. You can do any thing you feel when it gets to your turn. He did what he thinks that is right. He never pray for blood shed in his country. All he has to do is to bowl out with full respect and integrity.

  36. Dem.born am well, mak he lose mak.he no leave he will start seeing magic from above….. Is he d people’s choice?

  37. I don’t believe this. And thesame time, what the Jonathan did can never be forgotten because, it serves as exemplary leader for the coming generations.

  38. That’s not true, ICC would have arrested him even after he conceded deafeat. So what is this man saying? Jonathan is a good man and instead of puuting people’s lives in danger he decided to concede defeat.

  39. That is what a good leader should try and emulate. What Goodluck did is to just make peace…. Is indeed a good man.

  40. Lets forget about Jonathan,he was in the past, lets just face the present and think about how this country will progress

  41. I don’t think its true because if he does not want to willingly accept defeat he won’t concede ICC or not he his just a man of integrity so Mr Falana should watch what he says

  42. That is not reason enough sir Mr goodluck Jonathan has always been a noble man even his campaign that made me hate his coming back to power wasn’t his doing it was the party and supporters that caused that.

  43. Big lie, Jonathan conceded his defeated because
he said that his ambitions is not worth the blood sharing of any nigerian,
so Jonathan is the best president nigeria ever had

  44. ICC. Or nt. Jonathan conceded defeat because he thinks his re-election will not worth the blood shed and lives of innocent people…… Dats y he still remain my hero…. So falana pls rethink

  45. I think Goodluck conceded out of a good heart for the nation. Let’s see if Buhari will do so come 2019. Cause it’s clear what the result will be.

  46. No matter what, goodluck government will always be better than buhari’s government. ICC should go and rest

  47. This is a blunt lie. I disagree with Falani. Goodluck wanted peace and Nigerians to have their way that was why he conceded defeat.

  48. thats could be part of it. but i believe Jonathan accept defeat because of peace and respect of the nigerian citizens.

  49. Call it fear or anything, the young man don’t want any problem from any one.And his government has been the best

  50. Whatever made Jonathan conceded defeat in 2015 is a very good tool we shall still require as a nation this coming elections.

  51. Jonathan stepped down for Buhari not that he us afraid him and his threats but for his love for his people Nigerians, he showed a good quality leader in that action he took, but most of us does not understand

  52. I disagree with you. Goodluck was a perfect gentleman that was why he accepted defeat not that he is afraid of ICC.

  53. Good luck Jonathan made such decision to avoid crisis in the country, is a very peaceful man and we all commend him for that

  54. Not true ..he didnt want bloodshed hence he conceded defeat…what are you telling us now? Nigeria politics has a lot of twist and turns…

  55. Let the same process play out then in 2019 for free and fair, credible election devoid of violence. No to violence in 2019 general elections.

  56. GEJ isn’t afraid of any ICC, he did the best thing and to avoid bloodshed in the country. God bless GEJ

  57. I don’t believe that. GEJ was a true definition of simplicity and man of the people conceding to the defeat. Conceding to the defeat has nothing to do with fear of any commission because ICC itself has the power and right to make arrest or punish anyone who did wrongly irrespective of who he/she is or has done ever.

  58. All this plenty lies and stories about una want involve MAN GEJ…. you pple should left him out of your palava he was really sent by God o

  59. I don’t think it was because of the ICC Goodluck Jonathan accepted defect in 2015.. he did it on his own

  60. As for that president buari so called, if he refuse to leave that office he should be thrown out, while Good luck he knows while he has back out, not because of fear.

  61. Jonathan made the best decision ever, he accepted defeat, just for the best interest of the country.

  62. lol cliches im used to statements like this though. only those that understands know the value of jonathan. so forget falana

  63. It wasn’t fear of the ICC that made Jonathan to accept defeat, it was because he has the people in his heart and didn’t want war, he knew Buhari would have started war in this nation,

  64. It’s like the first time I am hearing about ICC. Where have they being when other presidents misbehaved.

  65. Does it mean ICC doesn’t exist before Babangida? One super story will always suffix with no basis. Oga Falana, pls go and sleep

  66. Nigeria is a full fledged democratic nation so anything done outside a democratic setting always call for concern. The mere reason for all the candidates vying for the nation top job in next year’s general election to sign peace accord is to be used as evidence in case any of them faulted the agreement.

  67. They can say all they want, all I know is Goodluck will still remain the hero he is because if he didn’t concede, we would have been the ones to bear the brunt.

  68. Whatever Jonathan did was because he loved his people and he is the man of peace so you people should not talk what you don’t know.

  69. Ok sir we hear u. Hope Buhari does same and step down quickly becos we are fed up with him. No be only fear of ICC. Jonathan said his life was not worth the blood of any Nigerian so oga keep it talk to urself

  70. You are absolutely wrong sir , Goodluck is a democrats. I does not like any thing that lead to violent in his country

  71. Hr is an humble man he did the right thing by stepping down or what do you want him do again

  72. Falana you are a blatant liar Mr Jonathan accepted defeat cos he had his subjects at heart and he felt that no blood is worth the fight

  73. Good one. We hope to have the same thing also happen this time around. free and Fair and the losers should be willing to concede also

  74. Jonathan conceded to Buhari in 2015 because the results of the election showed that he lost to him, ICC or no ICC. If Buhari is defeated in 2019 as I wish he would, let him equally be a gentleman and relinquish power. We don’t even wish to witness the violence not to talk of ICC.

  75. Are we really still analyzing the why behind former President Jonathan’s decision to concede victory in 2015, when 2019 polls is just around the corner? Too bad!!!

  76. Lies. Unnecessary lies. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan will continue to be a hero globally for what he has done. So scrap out your undue opinions. We don’t need it

  77. How much proofs does he has to justify such claims, the former president was a peaceful man and though he lost the election he stepped out for the winner, it has nothing to do with fear

  78. I don’t even know why you are coming up with this now, it seems u don’t know what it means to sheld human blood, our former president is a man of peace n nothing more.

  79. He demonstrate d character of a true Christian n democrats.no nation should b built on blood of people

  80. I like the step the Nigeria Ex president Jonathan and did by excepting defeat. I like him for that singular act. You can do any thing you feel when it gets to your turn. He did what he thinks that is right.

  81. Please you people should leave my goodluck alone…he left for peace to reign…no other reason please…

  82. No President can ever be like Goodluck Jonathan.. He knew lives would be lost of he won because of the threats made by some people you know.. He saved lives

  83. This may not be true because Jonathan stated categorically why he conceded defeat. It is because of the blood of innocent Nigerians

  84. That’s a good law put in place by d ICC. Definitely, this will reduce violence during election and transition of government.

  85. Whatever the case is, this sitting government have not really made any visible impact on the welfare of the citizens

  86. That’s not true sir, everything happened just the way God wanted it and goodluck being an understandable man and peace maker sign in for peace that’s all.

  87. Jonathan did the right thing by stepingdown ,what did you guy now want him do you guys should just live him alone.

  88. If someone ask me that who is the best President in Nigeria during his own time, I will just point to Jonathan.

  89. It makes sense
But I ll still want you to give credit to Jonathan
As he could have used his powers to turn the results to his favour which would need no annulment

  90. Falana I disagree with you Mr, if Johnathan had not done what he did no body knows what will be happening in Nigeria by now, he did what he because he is a peaceful man and God use him to saver innocent Nigerians from dying it has nothing to do with him been scared of any ICC or what ever

  91. Mr. Falana has his own point. But, former president step down for president buhari to make peace and shows as a good leader.

  92. I totally disagree with this statement. Jonathan did what he did then because he wanted peace to reign, because he is mot the type that fights for what does not belong to him. He is peaceful man and the best president Nigeria will ever had.

  93. I think what Jonathan did was the best, whoever wins become our president and the other person should accept defeat

  94. I don’t know how people thinks and feel Jonathan is the best President we ever had. but they are entitled to their opinion sha

  95. Falana u lie, how many African President have turn result in their favour and ICC did nothing, Jonathan was God sent.

  96. It is good like that. The ICC will act as check and balance for leaders that may have it in mind not to leave power for another winner in elections

  97. Falana is wrong .Gudluck Jonathan has always been the best.he cared for his country nd brought peace nd orderliness to the society.

  98. So why bring up the matter, who asked you, all you people are doing is to find a way to rub mud on Goodluck but we still love him.

  99. I disagree to that saying, good luck ebele Jonathan, did not concede defeat because he wished to he did it respect of the value of human life that is at risk..

  100. This man should keep quiet, the ones other African leaders has been doing how many did ICC faced, Jonathan saved this nation from blood shared and fight.
