Drug addict who set himself ablaze at Omole Estate, finally dies

A drug addict identified as Ahmed, who was running a barber’s shop until his life recently took a drastic turn due to drug abuse, has finally died from the injuries he sustained after dousing himself with petrol on Wednesday and setting himself ablaze at Omole Estate, Ojodu, Lagos.

Lagos State Emergency Management Agency told newsmen that the drug addict, was receiving treatment from injuries he sustained before his death. Tolu a resident of the area who alleged that  Ahmed walking along the road on Monday and advised him on the need to turn a new leaf, told Punch’s correspondent;

“He was a barber and used to have a shop around Akiode. .

He closed the shop sometime ago and started roaming about the neighbourhood. He smoked a lot which I think affected his brain.”

Another eyewitness, Samuel, described Ahmed as a drug addict, saying that he had been mentally unstable for some time. “Many people around here know him. .

He used to be a decent person before he suddenly changed as a result of drugs. He lived with his family within this community and they are aware of his plight,” she said.

Well here are all you need to know about the deceased;

  • The sad incident occurred on a road leading to Omole Estate, near Akiode Bus Stop, Ojodu area of Lagos state.

  • According to eye-witnesses, the incident occurred around 4:30 pm on Wednesday, July 4, 2018.

  • Ahmed emptied a five-litre jerrycan of petrol on his body; struck a match and lit himself.

  • Ahmed was rescued from the scene around 5:00 pm by officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Services after passersby had rushed to put the fire out.

  • Ahmed died while he was receiving treatment at a hospital.

  • On Friday, July 6, 2018, a senior official of the Lagos state emergency unit confirmed that Ahmed died while he was receiving treatment.

  • The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, confirmed the incident.
