Donald Duke who is expected to run on the party’s platform, declared his decision at the national secretariat of the SDP on Tuesday afternoon where he was received by the national secretary, Shehu Gabam, the publicity secretary, Alfa Mohammed, amongst others.
Donald Duke who is remembered by many Nigerians for massive projects like the Tinapa resort and the Obudu cattle ranch, both of which have been mired in controversy since his exit, left his party of about 20 years because according to him, it had derailed and lost its values and was not the same party he joined back then.
The former Governor had only few days ago, clarified the homosexuality comment credited to him while on a recent interview with Falz and Laila on the viral show ‘On The Couch’.
Donald Duke who disclosed how he intends to lead the country on the show, disclosed that he won’t criminalize gay people. He reportedly said;
“I don’t understand the emotional feelings a gayperson would have toward someone of their sexuality. I don’t understand it. But I would not criminalise them. I would ensure that they have the protection of the law. But if they want to exhibit their sexuality, then that’s an affront on the current norms of society.”
However reacting the statement which generated controversy, Donald Duke alleged that he was taken out of context and that ‘Homosexuality is a crime in Nigeria and ought to remain so’. Recall also that the interview was centered on food, before the presidential aspirant made it known. that he wanted to talk about gender and then delved into homosexuality. When one of the anchors, Falz asked him what he meant by to ‘exhibit their sexuality’, he narrated a scenario of arriving at New York and to see two men kissing.
