Victor Ebiye, the stand-up comedian who alleged that Alternative music singer, Aramide must have slept with organizers of the Headies’ awards to win a category, has disclosed that he never expected people to slam him the way they did because he wasn’t serious about what he said.
Ebiye who was heavily slammed and ridiculed for making such distasteful expression which he in turn apologized for, said if he used another Nigerian celebrity for the joke, people might not have reacted the way they did.
He told Saturday beats;
“I apologised because Aramide could not have done such a thing and the joke didn’t have an end.
“I don’t want to mention names, but if I had used another character, people might not have reacted the way they did. I guess I chose the wrong character for the joke.
“Aramide has been busy. Though I have not been able to see her physically, I have sent in my apologies to her. We talked about everything, so we are cool now.”
Recall that Ebiye’s comment triggered a backlash on social media, as he was called out by men and women alike, who defended Aramide, at a time when men have been accused of verbally trolling and physically and sexually assaulting women.
Ebiye’s comment came in the wake of the trending hashtag #MenAreScum. He further heightened the gender war, though some men have distanced themselves in an attempt to refute claims suggesting all men are offensive. A remorseful Victor Ebiye later apologised for his comments on his social medium platform that boasts over one hundred and fifty thousand followers.
He wrote: “I made a distasteful joke about Aramide last night at the Headies. I am embarrassed by my comments, I’m profusely sorry. Aramide is a hardworking artist who deserves every recognition she gets by merit. I sincerely apologise and pledge that such will not repeat itself”.
