Mr Usman claims he should have assumed the position having emerged as runner-up to Bolaji Abdullahi who in August resigned from the position and defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) along with his mentor, Senate President Bukola Saraki, Premium Times reports.

According to Mr Usman, Duro Meseko and Mr Issa-Onilu came behind him in the third and fourth places respectively in the contest for the position at the party’s national convention on June 23 in Abuja.

Shortly after Mr Abdullahi’s resignation on August 1, Mr Issa-Onilu was named the new spokesperson of the ruling party

In a suit with file number FCT/HC/BW/CV/142/18 and filed at the High Court in Abuja, Mr Usman is asking the court to declare him as the substantive spokesperson of the party.

Joined in the suit are Mr Issa-Onilu and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as defendants.

Mr Usman is asking the court to declare whether upon the interpretation of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria as amended, the constitution of the APC, the 2010 Electoral Act as amended and guideline for the 2018 National Convention of the APC, the party can appoint Mr Issa-Onilu into the position without having been duly elected at a congress of national convention.

He is also asking the court to declare whether upon the interpretation of the laws and the refusal of Mr Abdullahi to continue in the position, he, having come second in the election, should not be the proper person to occupy the office as the replacement.

Also contained in the originating summons to the court is a relief of the court declaring that whether Mr Issa-Onilu having come fourth in the election should be the proper person to be appointed as the replacement for Mr Abdullahi.

Mr Usman is, therefore, asking the court to issue an order directing the defendants, jointly or severally to accord him the recognition, rights, privileges as the duly elected National Publicity Secretary of the party at the National Convention.

  1. The court has to decide that ,not him telling the court what to do.. let their lawyers do their job…The better should be the winner.

  2. APC, these politicians have started playing their games again, if he is truly the rightful person to retain the position, why give it to another, they better do the right thing, now they will settle it in court

  8. I think if he came first he should be declared as the Spokesperson unless there are things the party does not want the public to know

  9. This is Nigeria where there is no such thing as justice in politics, I pray the court does the right thing…and install him instead

  10. The constitution of the party which the judges will rely on to make decisions will determine whether Usman will be declared the APC’s spokes person or not. So, let’s allow the case take it’s course in the court.

  14. The constitution of the party which the judges will rely on to make decisions will determine whether Usman will be declared the APC’s spokes person or not. So, let’s allow the case take it’s course in the court.

  15. Abubakar Usman, you have to take it easy and be patient. Is both the party and the court that can declare you as the spokesman for the party.

  16. Nothing you wouldn’t see or hear in Nigeria politics…. It such a dirty game and only the strong survives. Well let’s wait and hear what the court has to say!
