Cubana accident: A pedestrian was killed in a Cubana PE accident that occurred Sunday morning May 12th, 2019. A video of the Cubana accident video has gone viral on South Africa Whatsapp.

The 31-year old Port Elizabeth man allegedly responsible for the crash is in police custody, detained on charges of drunk driving, culpable homicide and reckless and/or negligent driving.

A second pedestrian also hit in the crash is in hospital with serious injuries.

Cubana accident:

The fatal accident happened in Beach Road on the city’s beachfront early on Sunday morning just before 4am.

According to police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu, a 31-year old Port Elizabeth male driver of an Audi A4 was driving in the right-hand lane towards Kings Beach, near the MacDonald’s intersection when he allegedly hit the two pedestrians standing next to the island on the road.

The driver is said to have then lost control of the vehicle and collided into four other stationary vehicles near the Humewood Hotel.

No-one was in these vehicles at the time. One of the pedestrians died at the scene. The other pedestrian, a 26-year old woman from Zwide, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Col Priscilla Naidu says the driver got out of the car and ran away, but was later arrested by police. According to Naidu, the driver is being detained on charges of drunk driving, culpable homicide and reckless and/or negligent driving. He will appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrates’ court on Monday.

Identity of the deceased pedestrian has not been announced.
