Court orders National Assembly to stop plan to take over Edo state Assembly

The Federal High court in Abuja has ordered the National Assembly to stop its plan to take over the Edo State House of Assembly.

The presiding judge, Justice Taiwo Taiwo, made the order at the resumed hearing on Wednesday in the case instituted by the Edo State Government to challenge the directive by the chambers of the National Assembly to the Governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki, to issue a fresh proclamation of the state House of Assembly.

The National Assembly also threatened to take over the legislative duties and powers of the Edo State House of Assembly should the governor fail to make the fresh proclamation with three weeks.

Justice Taiwo however ordered parties in the case to maintain status quo pending the determination of the case.

Last month, High Court in Benin City gave a restraining order to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Inspector General of Police, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State from interfering in the constitutional duties of members of the Edo House of Assembly.

Justice M. Umar gave the order following a motion ex-parte, filed by Alhaji Yayaha Audu Omogbai, Clerk of the Assembly and the Edo State House of Assembly.
