The Montrose County Sheriff’s Office is searching the South Canal for missing 17-year-old high school student Connor Imus.

Connor had set out for a walk with his dog, Bella on Sunday afternoon, the last time he was seen. He was supposed to be at work at 2 p.m. that day, but never appeared.

According to Sheriff Gene Lillard, Connor’s parents used a GPS locator on his phone and came up with an area near Pahgre and Kinnikin roads. They found the boy’s keys and phone by the side of the road and called authorities shortly before 7 p.m.

Authorities said it is possible Connor’s dog fell into the swift-moving water Sunday afternoon and he tried to save her.

The dog’s body was recovered shortly after 12 a.m. Monday from the grates of the South Canal hydro plant. The animal is deceased, Lillard said.

Deputies, posse members and crews from the Uncompahgre Valley Water Users Association have been working ever since to find the missing student, who is an all-state honorable mention in basketball. A number of friends, family members and other citizens have also assisted.

Searchers have used equipment in hopes of locating Connor, but hadn’t been successful as of noon Monday.

Today, the water users were shutting down the canal at the hydro plant, with permission of Delta-Montrose Electric Association.

The MCSO and posse are monitoring the canal around the clock. Strainers are in place.
