The beloved Citadel’s former head football coach was 69 years old.

Charlie Taaffe sister, Mary Bowen announced his death on social media in a post that read:

It is with a very heavy heart that I announce the passing of my dear brother Charles (Charlie, Chuck, Coach) Taaffe after a short battle with widespread cancer.

He was from the class of 1968.

My brother Dr Paul Taaffe (class of 1971) and I (1975) along with our brother Bobby (CBA 1978) will try to continue on with our broken chain and make our big brother proud.

We rejoice in knowing that he is reunited with our parents. Lots of Irish eyes smiling in heaven today!

Before his death, Taaffe served as head football coach for the Citadel between 1987 and 1996 and was arguably the best in the military college’s history.

During his time with the Bulldogs, Taffee compiled a record of 55-47-1 and led the Bulldogs to five winning seasons and three trips to the playoffs.

His most successful season came in 1992 when he led the Bulldogs to an 11-2 record and the Southern Conference championship. The Bulldogs ended the regular season as the No. 1 team in the nation.

Taaffe was chosen as the Eddie Robinson Award recipient, honoring the top football coach at the FCS level.

Taaffe was a native of Albany, N.Y.

Tough news today. Former Terp OC and great friend Charlie Taaffe passed away today. The Terp Football Family send our prayers to his wife Jan and son Brian and all his players he impacted.

Was one of the best play callers and coaches in the country.

Former UCF offensive coordinator Charlie Taaffe passed away Tuesday following a short cancer battle. Great man, great coach.

His extensive knowledge, experience and stability helped innovate the offense which we saw on full display in the 2014 Fiesta Bowl. R.I.P., Coach.
