Poet and activist, Gimba Kakanda who had accused Governor Wike of demolishing a central mosque in Port Harcourt has taken to his social media to rectify his claim, stating that the mosque had not yet been built.

'Central mosque in Port Harcourt had not been erected' - Gimba Kakanda clarifies

He wrote;

On the demolition of a central mosque in Port Harcourt, I have just been informed that the structure of the mosque had not been erected as reported, and that there was no incident of demolition at all. Unless anyone has a counter to this, I think we should all let it slide.

UPDATE: I have been informed that the structure of the mosque had not been erected as reported, and that there was no incident of demolition at all. Unless anyone has a counter to this, I think we should all let it slide.

He further explained his reason for his initial tweet, he wrote;

My tweet yesterday about the demolition of a mosque in Port Harcourt was to verify and seek explanation for a matter already trending and reported by major newspapers. Two groups have been presenting “eyewitness” accounts, with one side denying and the other claiming it happened.

I’ve stood for both religious groups and would never have overlooked such issues when it came to my attention. If the subject was a church, I would still have reacted to it. Persecution of a minority group anywhere in Nigeria is one thing I have never ever taken for granted.

I was not the source of the story, I was seeking answers to a matter already trending before I tweeted about it. And when I found out there was a side to the story, I tweeted to seek confirmation that it never happened as reported. The story is still in the Sun and Daily Trust.

  1. Someone has already called out muslims to gather and demolish churches in Kano. You want to confirm a story, you do it away from social media, and not generate unneccessary tension in the polity.

  2. Mr gimbal or what are you called. As a teacher, are you supposed to encourage “eye for an eye?. Imagine the religious war you would have instigated because you lack knowledge to handle sensitive issues. please let’s be rational in thinking rather than being sentimental. if we say we are one Nigeria, stop hating and let’s leave in peace and love one another.
