President Buhari who appointed his son-in-law, Junaid Abdullahi, as the head of Nigeria’s Border Communities Development Agency, caught the attention of Reno Omokri with the appointment.
The media aide of former President Goodluck Jonathan who accused President Buhari of being a tribalist over the appointment, asked if votes will be going to ‘such a tribalist’. Reno Omokri wrote;
”When we say @MBuhari is a tribalists, blind Buharists attack us. He has quietly appointed Junaid Abdullahi, his son in law and husband of his first daughter, Zulaihat, as the head of Border Communities Development Agency. Are you still going to vote such a tribalist? #RenosDarts”
Junaid Abdullahi who resumed duty as chairman of the border agency in October, is a retired Army captain and was married to Zulaihat, President Buhari’s first daughter who died in 2012 at the age of 40 from childbirth complications.
Mr Abdullahi took over from Jummai Idakwo, the former director of the agency, and while such appointments are usually announced by either the Presidency or the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, it is still not clear why both institutions kept a sealed lip over the appointment.
However sources claim that the appointment which was made last month, might have been hushed to save Mr Buhari the trouble of being accused of nepotism again. Recall that the Nigerian President has been enmeshed in regular allegations of being sectional, with critics saying his appointments have been lopsided since he assumed office in 2015.
Premium Times reported that critics often raise concerns about how most key federal appointments, especially top national security positions, have been ceded to northerners.
