24 hours after Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Buratai visited Damasak just after he relocated his operational HQ to Gudumbali in Borno State, Damasak, a town in Mobbar Local Government Area, some 186km away from Maiduguri have been attacked by Boko Haram according to Sahara Reporters.
However NAN reported that the Nigerian military and the terrorists are currently engaged in a heavy gun battle. According to a top Military source, the insurgents stormed the town to attack a military formation in the evening but they met stiff resistance from troops.
Brig.-Gen. Texas Chukwu who confirmed the attack to NAN through text message, said the troops were dealing with the terrorists. Chukwu wrote in his message;
” Troops of 145 Bn in Damasak, Borno State are engaging Boko Haram Terrorists who came to attack their location at about 6 p.m. this evening.“Fierce battle is on going right now. The troops are dealing with the terrorists.”
Few days ago, we reported that a Borno town was captured by the insurgents. While the Nigerian army claimed that the Islamist militants were severely weakened to the point of defeat, it was gathered that eight civilians were believed to have been killed, according to one local civilian militia member who spoke to AFP.The attack is reportedly the latest against troops in recent weeks, and comes as the government encourages the return of displaced people from the Borno state capital, Maiduguri, to Guzamala despite continued attacks. An official of Guzamala local government area, of which Gudumbali is the headquarters, told AFP:
“It is true Boko Haram have taken over Gudumbali this morning after pushing troops out of the military facility in the town.
“They are in full control of the town and the military facility,” the official said, speaking from Maiduguri on anonymity for fear of government sanction.
