Bisi Alimi was the first Nigerian man to reveal he is gay on National TV and he did this exactly 15 years ago today.
Nigerian gay rights activist, Bisi Alimi became the first man to reveal he was gay during a show with Funmi Iyanda on National Tv, 15 years ago.
Reminiscing, he stated that he still thinks it was a crazy idea and he felt there was a need to challenge the “misinformation” shared by the government, the religious fanatics and every body in the country.
This was after a statement was made by the Nigerian government that there is no gay in Nigeria. This made him decide to go live so he could prove the president wrong about the statement, atleast he was one.
According to him, he doesn’t want to marry a woman because the society wants him too and feels he should be permitted to express his love to a man who he feels comfortable with.
Funmi Iyanda who was the host of “New Dawn” the TV show where Alimi came out open about his sexuality, she stated that she could feel the disgust, the disapproval. During the show 15 years ago, she asked to know at what point he realized he was gay and stated that people do not think anyone is gay by nature.
