The death of Nwankwo who was shot in the early hours of Friday at a local bar in Kempton Park, Johannesburg, following a disagreement, brings to 121 the number of Nigerians killed in South Africa since January 2016.

It was gathered that the deceased was shot by one Lawrence Nwaranne (pictured left), the owner of West Corner Bar in Kempton Park, Johannesburg.

“The deceased, a patron of the bar, got drunk and started harassing a female worker. Information available to the union said that Nwankwo was chased out by security personnel, but he kept on coming back; became very aggressive and rude before the ugly incident occurred,’’ the Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian community in South Africa, Habib Miller said.

Miller further disclosed that the South African police later intervened and arrested the murder suspect.

“A murder case has been opened and investigation has started. We call on Nigerians to be calm and allow the law to take its course,” Miller said.

NAN reported that he said the union was against at any form of violence, adding that it would monitor the case to ensure that justice prevailed.

Recall that the Nigerian Union in South Africa (NUSA), had called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the murder of Nigerians in South Africa. The Publicity Secretary of the union in South Africa, Mr Habib Salihu, made the appeal from Pretoria, South Africa.

He said one James Ekeh, 36, an indigene of Imo, was killed at Mabopane Station near Pretoria by unknown assailants.

“Since Ebuka (another victim) was killed in Rustenburg more than two months ago without any arrest or prosecution, no fewer than six Nigerians have been brutally murdered.

“These killings came without any meaningful intervention to bring the perpetrators to book irrespective of their nationality,’’ he said.
