The Denver coroner’s office has ruled Alexis Keith death a homicide. according to a Friday news release by Steven Castro, spokesman for the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.

20 year old Alexis Keith was shot and killed by her ex-girlfriend Paulette Joyce while she, Alexis was on the phone with a police dispatcher.

The shooting happened in the 2700 block of West 28th Avenue, near Speer Boulevard and Bryant Street, which is just west of Interstate 25.

In an arrest-warrant affidavit, the victim Alexis was identified as an ex-girlfriend of Joyce’s.

According to the affidavit, the victim Alexis called 911 about 3:21 a.m. and told a dispatcher that Joyce was pointing a gun at her. The victim continued to answer the dispatcher’s questions for about five minutes, at which point she stopped talking and there was screaming in the background.

Just before the shooting, according to a third woman who was at the scene and is being interviewed as a witness by the police, she and Joyce had gone to the apartment where the shooting occurred.

“Ms. Joyce’s belonging(s) were outside the apartment, in the hallway,” the affidavit said.

Joyce and the witness went into the apartment and Joyce allegedly got into a “heated” argument with the victim. The witness saw Joyce pointing a gun at the victim and “heard a gun shot,” according to the affidavit.

When DPD officers arrived, they found Alexis suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to Denver Health Medical Center, where she was pronounced deceased.

Joyce fled the apartment and was found on a patio near 2795 Speer Blvd. and taken into custody, the affidavit said. A handgun was found nearby.

According to the Denver Police Department, Paulette Beazhane Joyce, 21, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of first-degree murder in a domestic violence case.
