Alexa’s death was announced by her brother, Andrew Young who wrote on Facebook:

My job as “big bro” to 4 little sisters has always been my most important job; it’s the job I’ve taken most seriously and been the proudest of.

This big-bro-role has also been one fun ride. My sisters and I have spent hours playing barbies and legos; they’ve endured hours of tormenting during my reign as “babysitter;” we’ve grown with each other physically and emotionally; we’ve lived together; and we’ve traveled across different countries together.

But, today wasn’t a fun big-bro or family day. Today we said goodbye to our little girl and sister, Alexa Jo.

She and I took these photos together (as her senior pictures) only a few weeks ago. Just for fun, my mom yelled “Flex, Lex!” The flexing-photo-outcome was candid but it’s become one of my favorites.

Alexa was – and is – one strong girl. Those who knew her knew this was illustrated in everything from her personality to her wit to her faith. Although the day was tough, it wasn’t near as tough and strong as Alexa was as she stayed with us for hours and hours in order to give life to so many other people through the donation of her – strong – organs.

Even in the last hours of her life, she found a way to make me the damn proudest brother I could be.

As I write this, I don’t feel strong. But I know that keeping her alive in our hearts and through our memories will give our family the strength it needs. I love you, Alexa. Can’t wait to see you again.

Love,

Your big bro
