After a 12-year-wait, Nigerian Falconets win football gold

Nigeria’s U20 football players, the Falconets, is the new champions of the women’s football tournament of the 12th African Games in Rabat on Thursday.

They won the gold after a 3-2 penalty shoot-out win over the Cameroonian opponents.

The two teams had battled to a 1-1 draw at the group stage and 0-0 at the final. The victory was the first gold for the Falconets in 12 years at the African games.

The teams had played out a draw after extra-time before the Falconets won the ensuing penalty kicks at Boubker Aamar Stadium.

In the semi-final, Christopher Danjuma’s side won Algeria 3-0, while Cameroon required extra-time to subdue hosts Morroco 3-1 on the same day.
