Ademola Lookman snubs Super Eagles for England

Ademola Lookman has pledged his international allegiance to England, after holding face-to-face talks with Under-21 head coach, Aidy Boothroyd, over persistent stories linking him with Nigeria.

The Everton winger was part of the Under-20 squad that won the World Cup in 2017 and is expected to play for the Under-21 next summer in Italy during the Euro 2019.

However, Lookman has been the subject of concerted interest from Nigeria, whose manager Gernot Rohr is preparing for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Three weeks ago, Rohr said that the Everton player “wanted to change his mind so he can play for us as he will add something to our team”.

Boothroyd spoke with Lookman, 21, at St George’s Park last week and has been assured that he is committed to representing England.

“Every time I see him I have a little joke with him about it,” said Boothroyd whose side face Denmark in a friendly on Tuesday evening. “I say: “Why would you want to leave us,” Boothroyd told

“But he’s very focused on England – that’s what he tells me. He says he wants to play international football for England.”

  1. he has chosen a wrong path, because there are too much talents in England fold….he will just be used and dumped.

  2. Certain things he has put into consideration has led to his choice. No one can choose for him because it is his own career.

  3. It is choice to make so let him be.Nigeria doesn’t have what it takes to help build budding players career

  4. Nigeria football federation should respect his decision but trust me,he we eventually regret this decision.

  5. As an ardent follower of the sport, I think you should go and check your predecessors that took the same step and what the outcome was like.

  6. I think he made the right choice, I am in shoes I would still make the same choice, this country is not worth sacrificing for

  7. We wish him the best on his career. Hope he don’t get to end up like shola ameobi and derren bent and even agbonlahor whom got national call ups from their root nation but snubbed them but they had may be 2 caps for England national team

  8. Gone are the days when i use to campaign for love of country above self. please enjoy your stay there and make the best of your football career

  9. My brother Nigeria no go pay you lik England o. U better think through it before making any decision. All the best in your career

  10. Nah him sabi once he his making headway whichever country side he plays for its none of any man business all the best lookman

  11. His leg , his choice . He should play for the country he wants,it’s his career. Bit he shouldn’t come back later to talk something else .

  12. Well to me it’s not new cause almost all our young talent are going to play for other countries even nationalized themselves to other countries, that to me is bad. Where are we getting it wrong?

  13. He should play for the country he wants,it’s his career. Bit he shouldn’t come back later to talk something else .

  14. The coach should train the ones at hand very well ,I think they will represent us well than going for who doesn’t want us

  15. My brother go where your talent will pay you, Nigeria won’t pay you joor, they don’t care about players

  16. Well that’s his own decision to take you and I won’t force him to play for Nigeria for me it’s his choice he made it by him self so let him be after all when a Nigerian player is injured the government don’t care about them.

  17. That’s good because Nigeria doesn’t take care of their players, so I support him as long as this will boost his football career and lead him to higher level. Good luck to him.
