The convict, who was the head of a vigilante group in Iyin Ekiti, was said to have committed the offence on December 15, 2016, in the community. .

Justice Lekan Ogunmoye, in his judgement, said the charge of murder against the convict could not be substantiated, but a case of manslaughter was established. .

“Considering his age and the discretion of the court, he is hereby sentenced to 25 years imprisonment without an option of fine,” Ogunmoye ruled.

The police prosecutor identified as Seyi Akomolafe, had told the court how an eyewitness alleged that the retired soldier and other vigilante members came to the deceased’s compound on the allegation that a thief was taking refuge in the house.

He said, “Ogunboyo sighted Esan and confronted him for being rude and disrespectful because he refused to stand up while a search of the compound was being conducted. .

Furiously, he brought out his dane gun and shot the deceased. Esan’s corpse was later found in a deep pit along the Awo-Ekiti Road.” .

In the course of the case, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Ekiti State, Gbemiga Adaramola, called 7 witnesses, including a medical doctor who carried out a post-mortem examination on the deceased.

  1. The man got what he deserves. He abused his power and position as the Vigilante leader and decided to take powers into his own hands by killing someone. Good for him

  3. An old man that suppose to die peacefully now this. Come to think of it, I strongly believe he was contracted to kill the man if not what now led to shooting someone in the not of not standing when checking his house and moreover who took him from the to dump in a pit if not the old wicked man. Some is behind this and the police need to investigate very well to know who’s behind this.

  4. Why did you take law into your hands….. Yes you really a retired Colonel who has served your country well. And still didn’t retire by joining the vigilant group. It’s quite a shame your sent to finish the remaining part of your life in jail.

  19. In respective of the offense the dead soul might have committed you don’t have the rights to take law into your hands. Now dance to the music of your actions.

  20. Oh…I read about this story earlier this week and thank God the man was jailed. I hope he learnt his lesson

  25. He deserved it, at least he will spend the rest of his life in jail. But he should have been sentenced to death.

  26. I wonder the kind of spirit that dwells in that old man that very day to act without sense.that 25yrs is very go for him.let him face all the consequences

  27. The Vigilante leader and decided to take powers into his own hands by killing someone. He will now end his life in jail

  28. What he did is not right but the sentence is too much for the old man because he waste the poor guy life just life that oh lord have mercy

  29. What meaning of rubbish na I go leave Nigeria ooo because you’ve retire you think you can do the way you like Abi

  30. I wonder the kind of spirit that is in that old man, to act without sense,
    that 25yrs is very good for him;
let him serve the punishment severely to know the pain’s of his quick anger.

  31. Karma has caught up with him. 25 years in prison is small. How can he take a life he can’t give? He let anger rule him now he is paying for it. That serves him right

  32. See how this old soldier ended his life in prison. He is seventy one year’s now added to twelve years and six months which is eighty three years and six months. That means he will die there because Nigeria prison is hell

  33. Na wah oo, maybe there was a different issue with them, now wasted a life. He should face de punishment, infect with hard labour..

  34. Big fool.A retired army this is all you could teach those coming behind you .By the time you finish serving you will be 96years.

  35. That serve him right hmm for all those thinking the can put laws in there hand should learn from this man’s case

  36. Na wa oh, a 71 years old man vigilante what is he doing there in the first place. Did he think that place I a battlefield. That sound him right he will even die there before the 25 year is over.

  37. Very sad story. Imagine going to jail at the age of 71.He might not come out alive. As a retired military personnel, he should have put his military training and experience into practice and handled the situation.

  38. This is absolute wickedness, killing a young guy that still had a dream to pursue..
He should face the consequences but this his age sha..

  39. Why are they just putting old men in jail,? Are they trying to distract us from the young criminals roaming the streets?

  40. This is bad, he his old already. That does not mean he shouldn’t face justice. How many years is left for him.. may God help him.

  41. This world is turning to another thing everyday. To kill is now like fetching water. May God help us all.

  42. Instead of spending his old age in peace and love, he chose to spend it behind jail walls. Hope he doesn’t die there.

  43. Old age is a privilege to set your life right with God so that you can make heaven… Too bad u will not in jail

  44. Considering his age, he should have been shot dead from behind and relief him of his mystery. 25 years ain’t the best judgement really

  45. This is outrageous, it’s certain he wouldn’t make it out alive. I simple house arrest is okay or death penalty, the dude will surely die soon before

  46. Just because he was sitting down while his house was being searched, and he brought out his Dane gun and shot him dead,
25 yrs is too lenient, death by hanging should be given.

  47. After serving your country wholeheartedly, you decided to end it up this way, may you find peace with your maker because you are definitely dying there.

  48. How can you kill person because he didn’t give you respect in fact he didn’t say the truth why he killed him .there is something beyond his reason but you have gotten your good reward, you will die in the prison.

  49. Colonel went too far or probably he was high or drunk… see the young man u wasted just like that… At your age, u are spending 25years in jail…

  50. I strongly believe he was contracted to kill the man if not what now led to shooting someone in the not of not standing when checking his house and moreover who took him from the to dump in a pit if not the old wicked man

  51. He abused his power and position as the Vigilante leader and decided to take powers into his own hands by killing someone. Good for him

  52. Why on earth will he do that? At his age, the boy kill is just like his son, honestly speaking he deserve it.

  53. No matter how high his offense may be he doesn’t deserve to be killed. The judge has also done well

  54. This will be a lesson to those who feels they could kill human being like them and go Scott free. No matter what don’t kill

  55. Well I think that’s the end of him cause with his age and the jailed years they should just declare him life imprisonment

  56. SERVES HIM RIGHT…IF AT HIS AGE HIS STILL HAVE A DEVILISH MIND INSTEAD OF FACING GODS WAY NOW THAT HE IS APPROACHING GRAVE….FACE YOUR JAIL TERM MR. MAN GOOD FOR YOU

  57. This is not good all all a man that’s suppose to be enjoying in his home now he will spend it in jail

  58. Hmmmmmm
No mrrf nah because he might not make it again
    Age isn’t on his side
But he has to face justice

  59. You can spend the remaining part of your life in jail, you killed so you must face your punishment no matter your age

  60. At 71 going to prison for 25 years, it’s sad. Too bad he took laws into his own hands without proper investigation. See what has become of him.

  61. Justice prevailed at last. you can’t say because you are a ex military man and a vigilante, you can just shoot or kill people at your own will.. And expect to go Scot free. Old or young, no one is above the law
