The little girl was admitted to the trauma care ICU in the paediatric ward, medical superintendent Shyama Kanungo said. She was on ventilator support ever since she was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition.
On April 21, the little girl was found unconscious in a school compound in Salipur area of Cuttack. She was rushed to a hospital in Salepur but later shifted to the SCB.
The girl was reported missing after she went to a shop near Jagannathpur Nodal Upper Primary school to buy chocolates around 6pm on April 21.
The accused, one Mohammad Mustaq aged 23, lured her away with a chocolate into the school premises where he viciously raped her.
“After raping her on the school premises, he attempted to kill her by throttling her. Accused Mohammad Mustaq was arrested,” said Krutibas Jena, Cuttack (rural) additional superintendent of police.
The girl was first taken to a local health centre and then to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in the city of Cuttack, where she died on Sunday.
Shyama Kanungo, superintendent of the hospital said:
“The girl died of a cardiac arrest. A team of specialists from various disciples was treating her.
She was in a deep coma since Saturday.”
Kanungo said the girl’s body would be handed over to her family after a post-mortem. The girl’s sister demanded a speedy trial in the case and death sentence for the culprit.
There has been widespread public anger in India in recent months regarding cases of rape of young girls.
